Potential Rail Transport Restrictions in Hungary
Dear Partners,
We would like to inform you that Hungary is currently facing significant challenges regarding the stability of its electricity supply. Due to the exceptionally low water level of the Danube River, the cooling systems of the country's main nuclear power plant have been affected, requiring a gradual reduction of its generating capacity.
As a result, the Hungarian authorities are preparing a number of emergency measures aimed at stabilizing the national power grid. The measures under consideration include:
- restrictions on the use of air conditioning systems for both commercial and residential consumers,
- limitations on charging electric vehicles,
- reduced electricity supply for industrial consumers,
and, most importantly for our industry, time restrictions on the operation of electric trains, affecting both freight and passenger services.
The Hungarian ministry of Transport will organize a press conference and provide more detailed information about the measures taken.
Based on the information currently available, the measures affecting rail transport are expected to enter into force on Monday 3/8/2026
We will inform you of all the news as soon as official information becomes available.
We ask for your understanding of the situation.
