Official Update – Rail Freight Restrictions in Hungary Due to the Energy Crisis
Dear Partners,
We have received an official notification from our Hungarian partner regarding the exceptional situation affecting Hungary's power supply system.
Due to the exceptionally low water level of the Danube River, the Hungarian Government has decided to gradually reduce the output of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which, according to the latest information, is expected to be completely shut down from Monday, 3 August 2026. The Paks Nuclear Power Plant normally generates more than one-third of Hungary's electricity demand, making it a critical part of the country's power system.
As a consequence of this unprecedented energy crisis, the Hungarian Ministry of Transport and Investment has ordered the suspension of rail freight services between 17:00 and 22:00, effective 3 August 2026.
As a result, trains already en route or awaiting handover between railway operators may not be able to continue during the restriction period. At this stage, it is not possible to accurately predict which services will be affected or the extent of any resulting delays.
According to the information currently available, additional measures by the Hungarian Government cannot be ruled out should the energy situation deteriorate further. Such measures could lead to further restrictions affecting rail freight operations and logistics activities.
We are closely monitoring the situation and will inform you immediately of any official developments.
Thank you for your understanding.
